Three Important Landscaping Trends Among Modern Homeowners

Blog

It wasn't that long ago when the average lawn and garden area looked pretty much like that of the neighboring properties. Most people had a large expanse of lawn, a few specimen trees, some foundation shrubs, and one or two flowerbeds. Ambitious gardeners had perennial borders and perhaps a backyard vegetable garden, but for the most part, homeowners followed the standard blueprint mentioned above.

Today's homeowners are forging their own personal garden paths, however, and creating outdoor living spaces based on how they want to live rather than trying to keep up with the neighbors. Following are just three of today's major landscaping trends that reflect the preference for a more customized ambiance.

Secluded Spaces

Homeowners of the past spent hours every weekend cultivating velvety green lawns, and they wanted to show them off to the neighbors as well as anyone who happened to be passing by. Their modern counterparts, however, prefer to create secluded outdoor spaces that acted as private sanctuaries. Whether it's a serene space complete with water features or a culinary herb garden, people want their yard and garden areas to fit the way they live -- and they want to enjoy their property without the world watching. Vegetative hedges as well as privacy fences are huge this year.

Outdoor Dining Beyond the Patio

Today's homeowners are moving beyond the patio and creating al fresco dining areas situated further from their main homes, bringing a whole new dimension to outdoor dining. Eating outside used to be strictly for barbecues and roasting hot dogs, but formal and semi-formal dinner parties served in a dining spot in the garden are becoming increasingly common. Some dining spots are as simples as a table and chairs on a wooden platform, while others are elaborate affairs complete with overhead coverings and outdoor fireplaces to keep diners warm during chilly evenings.

Vertical Gardening

Vertical gardening is a concept with deep historical roots that has recently found new life in modern American society. As the average yard has gotten significantly smaller in recent years, homeowners have sought innovative ways to make better use of available space. Specialty planters are available for those who want to incorporate vertical gardening into their outdoor living space.  Vertical gardening became a strong trend in 2017 and is expected to grow further in 2018. Improving The Look Of Our Trees

After we moved into our house, we knew that something had to be done about our trees. The branches looked off-kilter, and we could tell that someone had pruned them incorrectly at one time or another. Unfortunately, we weren't really sure how to repair the damage. A family friend talked with us about hiring a professional tree trimmer, and so we called them the next day. The difference that they made was astounding. They removed dead branches, trimmed up the shape, and let more sunlight through. My blog is all about improving the look of your trees by hiring a professional.
